IPL Photo Rejuvenation-Younger-Looking Skin
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) skin treatments using
the photorejuvenation process represent a break
through in age-defying skin care. This new
technique treats skin damage non-inversely -
there is no disruption of the skin's epidermal
surface. IPL treatments address the effects of
photoaging and sun damage with low risk of
complications and no recovery time.IPL is the
gold standard for photorejuvenation.
This FDA-cleared, patented technology provides
dramatic results for a variety of benign conditions,
including age spots, sun-induced freckles, symptoms of rosacea, birthmarks, unsightly veins,
acne scarring and other blemishes.Today's active lifestyle doesn't leave much time for recovery
from a cosmetic procedure, which is why IPL technology is one of the the single best technologies
for overall skin improvement.
IPL treats a wide variety of skin conditions:
Sun damage (face, chest, shoulders)
Flushing
Skin texture
Facial redness
Broken capillaries
Brown spots
Dark circles around the eyes
Sun-induced freckles
Hands, chest, and face
Age spots
Fine lines and wrinkles
Large pores
During treatment, the IPL wavelength is optimized so that the energy is absorbed only by the
unwanted melanin, raising the temperature to cause shattering of the pigment. Deeper level
damaged blood vessels are treated at the same time.
Shortly after treatment, the unwanted pigment cells (or melanin) have been thoroughly fragmented
without damage to the surrounding tissue. Vascular lesions are heated, causing coagulating and
shrinking of the vessels.
In the weeks after treatment, the shattered melanin particles are eliminated through a process which
causes the fragmented pigments and damaged melanocytes to be absorbed by the body. Little or no trace of the initial lesion
remains. The treated vessels deeper within the epidermis are reabsorbed by the body in much the same way.
Because the treatment is gentle, there is no interruption of routine activities. By helping to remove the age spots (sun-induced
freckles) and broken capillaries, the result is overall younger looking skin. While each treatment improves the skin, major improvements
are typically accomplished over a series of treatments.
Any patient with broken capillaries, sun-induced freckles, birthmarks, melasma and/or blotchy pigmentation (sun damage), can
benefit from treatments with the IPL (intense pulsed light) and expect excellent improvement. The effects of IPL can be expedited
with the application of a medication pre-treatment, called Levulan®.
Levulan® is a 20% solution of Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA). ALA is a natural substance found naturally in the body, as it is a precursor
for hemoglobin synthesis. When the application of Levulan® is combined with IPL Photorejuvenation treatments, we turbo boost the
light therapy and enhance the overall results. IPL treatments also stimulate the formation of more collagen in the skin, thus giving
your skin a renewed, refreshed, smoother texture and appearance. This is termed an activated Fotofacial, or photodynamic skin
rejuvenation when PDT (Levulan®) is added to regular IPL photorejuvenation.
Typically 4-5 IPL treatments are recommended per area (4-6 weeks apart) for optimal results, but with Levulan® the number of
treatments needed and recommended is usually reduced to 3.
Most patients describe the sensation to be like the snap of a rubber band on the skin as
the pulses of energy are delivered through the handpiece. Some patients who are extra
sensitive opt to have a topical numbing cream applied beforehand.Facial, neck and chest
treatments are usually repeated at 4 week intervals. A session of 4-5 treatments for
each area is recommended for optimal results, but this varies by patient. When you
come in for a consultation, Dr. Ahdoot can give you a better estimate for how many
treatments you will need to accomplish your goal. The sessions are usually reduced to
3 with Levulan®. Once your treatments are completed you may need to return for
additional treatments, consult Dr. Ahdoot for details.
New Treatment Options: Lasers and IPL™
Breakthrough technology provides non-invasive, gentle treatments for varicose and spider veins as well as facial blood vessels.
Multi-application IPLTM System technology includes a pulsed laser light combined with a broad band of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
to offer the most effective and long-lasting results for the widest range of benign vascular lesions. With proprietary Multiple
Synchronized PulsingTM capabilities, IPL systems selectively heat and destroy different sized blood vessels at depths below the
skin's surface with excellent results. Physicians are now able to treat complex and interwoven networks of large vessels and webs
of small capillaries with pinpoint accuracy, eliminating the unwanted veins and sparing the adjacent healthy ones. By delivering
the laser light in highly focused pulses, the IPL computer-controlled system allows the skin and healthy surrounding tissues to cool
down, avoiding thermal damage. Pain during treatment and side effects afterward are greatly reduced. Most people can immediately
return to their normal routines.
Intense Pulsed Light is the treatment of choice for surface veins and spider veins, while greatly improving the overall appearance
of the skin. In addition to treating blood vessels, IPL provides dramatic results for a variety of benign conditions that are common to
the aging face, including age spots, sun-induced freckles, symptoms of rosacea, birthmarks, unsightly veins, acne scarring and other
blemishes. Treatments are well tolerated and patients quickly return to their normal activities.
